The Nancy Sever Gallery is pleased to present Greg Daly | Colour, an exhibition of the work of one of Australia’s leading ceramicists.

Greg Daly is an internationally acclaimed and respected ceramic artist specialising in rich glaze effects. His work is held in over 85 national and international art gallery and museum collections, including those of the National Gallery of Australia and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Greg has had 105 solo exhibitions and has exhibited in over 250 international and national group exhibitions, including in Britain, Canada, Croatia, Czechia, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey and the USA. He has won 36 national and international awards.

The art historian and art critic Peter Haynes has written that Greg Daly’s work displays ‘an aesthetic virtuosity, consummate technical ability and a complete understanding of and passion for his chosen material: clay’.

The artist explains that the works in this exhibition explore colour derived from different metal oxides: cobalt, copper, chrome and silver. As metal oxides give the colour in glazes, Greg has revised glazes from the past as well as exploring new colours. In this exhibition you will find lustre glazes that capture iridescent colours and for the first time in over 12 years high temperature glazes on porcelain.

The Nancy Sever Gallery is pleased to present Triptych | 40 Years of Ceramic Leadership, an exhibition that showcases and celebrates the work of three of Australia’s premier ceramic artists, each of whom led the Ceramics Workshop at the School of Art that is part of the Australian National University. The exhibition’s title refers to these three artists and is a metaphor for the elements that constitute the overall tripartite framework that is the “triptych” – the three parts that make the single whole. The exhibition has been curated by the art historian and arts writer Peter Haynes, who has written of the three artists:

“Alan Watt’s career at the School of Art spanned the years 1979 to 1998. These were formative years for the institution then known as the Canberra School of Art. Watt’s tenure saw the Ceramics Workshop become a drawcard for many respected international and Australian artists and established the Workshop as a centre for ceramics education. Watt’s own practice reflected his strong connection with the land and especially the coastal topographies of the far South Coast of New South Wales. His work embraces the ceramic medium and the special qualities of clay but also extends into exercises in bronze and steel. His singular aesthetic continues to express the monumentality of the land and the intimacy of human connection with the environment.

“Janet DeBoos’s tenure covered the years 1998 to 2013. The groundwork established by Watt flourished and national and international connections offered creative and intellectual stimulus to staff and students alike. DeBoos’s work is highly refined and imbued with an intellectual edge that gives it an embracing and vigorous aesthetic tension. Her explorations into the elision, overlaying and interaction of ostensibly unconnected cultures have manifested into an important and distinguished body of work.

“Greg Daly headed the Ceramics Workshop from 2013 to 2016. This period was one that saw many changes within the University and within the School of Art. For Daly though the importance of continuing the inculcation of a critical attitude towards the making of the ceramic object was the imperative that impelled his pedagogical approach. In his own work the presence of the Australian landscape is a major component of the beautifully balanced admixture of material, form, surface and decoration that characterises his powerful art.

“The 3 artists of Triptych are masters of their craft. The selected works on display portray a depth of talent rarely seen together. The strength of each individual’s visual language produces powerful ceramic (and other) expressions and underscores the important contribution of the Ceramics Workshop to the development and contemporary history of Australian ceramics”.

The Nancy Sever Gallery is pleased to present Greg Daly | Dappled Light, an exhibition of work by one of Australia’s leading ceramicists.

The work in this exhibition continues the artist’s exploration of light and lustre glazes. There are four series in the exhibition: Dappled Light, Morning Light, Sunset Sky and Parched Earth, each of which draws upon light and interaction with the atmosphere and environment outside his studio. Dappled Light series is light seen through the tree canopy and grasses, whereas Morning Light is more light reflected off clouds, morning mist or the first gold light of morning. Sunset Sky series captures the blood red sky at sunset. Parched Earth series captures the texture of the first droplets of rain onto the dry powdery ground, creating a pitted surface. Then the rain creates puddles that reflect light.

The Nancy Sever Gallery was pleased to show Greg Daly | 101st, an exhibition of work by one of Australia’s leading ceramicist. In 1976 his first solo exhibition was held at Melbourne’s Potter’s Cottage. After 45 years of making, this is his 101st.

The Australian landscape is a constant in his art. “I have always drawn inspiration from my surroundings,” he writes, “and this prompted the original working title of this exhibition, Line of Sight: Land, Sky, Light. The views I see from my studio have been distilled into these pots, from the grasses at the doorstep to the far hills seen across paddocks full of eucalypts. And beyond, upwards into the atmospheric realm full of vast ephemeral structures that tower over the land and keep it nourished. And across all this, the light. Light falling on, reflecting off and diffusing through all that surrounds me, emphasising textures and, most importantly, bringing with it colour”.

Master of his medium and with a highly developed aesthetic, Greg Daly produces what the art critic Peter Haynes has described as “sophisticated essays in the ceramic medium, striking for the balanced harmony of elements and precise geometries of form.”

The Nancy Sever Gallery is pleased to show Days Like this….., an exhibition of work by one of Australia’s leading ceramicists, Greg Daly.

Greg Daly is internationally known and respected as a ceramic artist specialising in rich glaze effects. He is also the author of several books on glazing and glazing techniques. His work has been included in 24 international book publications and is held in over eighty national and international art gallery and museum collections, including those of the National Gallery of Australia and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. He has held over seventy solo exhibitions and won 36 national and international awards. He has also exhibited in over 200 international and national group exhibitions. He was President of Craft Australia from 1992-1995.

One of the most satisfying characteristics of lusterware is its ability to respond to and reflect light - the way in which the colours change in artificial light and according to the quality of natural light. Daly uses the forms of his ceramics to optimise the way in which their surfaces play with light.

The Australian landscape is a constant in his art. He captures the effects of the light on the countryside around Cowra in the central west of New South Wales in rich and fluid surfaces that mark the changing patterns of light during the passage of the day. As he has written “The first and last light of the day, light through cloud, light behind cloud, light diffused by rain and storm, the moment just after sunset when the land glows for a short while. These are the moments I look for and it is in the nature of lustre to capture these”.

The Nancy Sever Gallery was pleased to show Moments in the Day, an exhibition of work by one of Australia’s leading ceramicists, Greg Daly.

Greg Daly is internationally known and respected as a ceramic artist specialising in rich glaze effects, and also as the author of Glazes and Glazing Techniques (1995. Simon & Schuster). His work has been included in 24 international book publications and is held in 80 national and international art galleries and museums collections, including those of the National Gallery of Australia and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. He has held over 70 solo exhibitions and won 36 national and international awards. He has also exhibited in over 200 international and national group exhibitions. He was President of Craft Australia from 1992-1995.

Greg Daly has just returned from three months in Europe where he participated in an international ceramics symposium in Hungary and gave master classes.

The Australian landscape is a constant in his art. He captures the effects of the light on the landscape around Cowra in the central west of New South Wales in rich and fluid surfaces that mark the changing patterns of light during the passage of the day.

GREG DALY | MOMENTS IN THE DAY opened at the Nancy Sever Gallery on Saturday 26 November and run until 18 December 2016.

Artist's Statement

So much happens in a day, in the landscapes outside our windows, that by evening it is hard to remember the light of the morning. Every moment of the daily cycle reveals the landscape in a different way. At first light, as the rays of the sun are filtered through the morning mist, the land appear softened, the details less apparent. But as the sun rises and the clouds depart, the light becomes harsher. Harder. A reminder of the power and potential dangers of the Australian sun. On to sunset and dusk, the climax of the daylight’s performance, when the extravagance of the colours and textures peak for mere moments. Reach for your camera and you’ve missed it. Finally the moonlight, stripping the land of it’s vibrancy, but if you look carefully it’s all still there. Silhouettes on the horizon. Colours in the dark. All gilt in silver.

LUMINOUS LANDSCAPES | NEW CERAMICS BY GREG DALY

Greg Daly is an internationally known and respected ceramicist specialising in rich glaze effects. He is a graduate of RMIT University and is currently Head of the Ceramics Workshop at the ANU School of Art.

Greg Daly's work is represented in over 80 National and International Art Galleries and Museums. His works has been included in over 200 national and international exhibitions. He is the author of several books on ceramics.

This exhibition has been curated to coincide with the 14th Australian Ceramics Triennale to be held in Canberra in July.
