Artist’s Statement

A M P L I F Y, 2021

‘Amplify’ is an extension of a more organic motif that I have been exploring for the last few exhibitions. This group of paintings extends the format to include more opportunity for colour interactions within the composition by using mid-ground forms and colours that act as a type of ‘halo’ around the foreground formations, adding another level or amplification to the composition.

As is always part of my practice, the show has grown organically and is never programed or themed with a narrative, but rather it’s only at the end of painting that any connections between colour and composition are made. I find this to be the best way for work to come naturally, and allows me to look at each composition as an individual.

This show is made up of mostly larger scale paintings, the larger the canvas, the more happy I am whilst painting, the larger format allows me to paint with the body and less with the wrist. This gives the pictorial space a more sculptural quality with more of a reference to the human form, although this is not intentional but more a happy observation after the work is completed.

This body of work is the next step for me in the progression of more organic forms as well as a return toward predominantly larger scale paintings. I have always enjoyed working with canvases that are more human size, and the way that this changes the relationship between the work and the viewer.

The Nancy Sever Gallery is pleased to present Shape Shifting, an exhibition of recent work by Cameron Haas.

Cameron Haas began studying fine art at the University of Tasmania and completed his studies at the National Art School in Sydney where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in 2010. He now lives and works in Canberra

Artist statement

This new body of work is about drawing. I have made a shift from geometric painting with its crisp lines and flat paint surfaces to these new works, stepping into more organic forms and revisiting explorations I made in this field at the end of my studies. This new focus, or refocus, in my practice has been brought about by a deliberate desire to step back into the unknown, but also serendipitously as a result of day to day circumstances.

In recent years, I’ve become a father to two children, and this has meant my time in the studio now comes in concentrated bursts of energy, at a moment’s notice. I’ve taken again to having a sketchbook with me, drawing when I can, and this has brought me closer to a previously lost daily practice.

In preparatory drawing I have developed forms. Over time and many drawings these have become almost figurative in the way they sit and interact within the drawing and painting space.

These compositions are transferred onto the canvas with large brushes and paint. I then work all the elements to a resolution constantly altering shape, line, edge, finish, colour and tone. Whilst the paint surface is flat, looking closer will reveal previous layers of colour and changes in edge quality as well as changes to the overall composition.

Making changes, painting over, and erasing has all returned to my process, which has made for a transition towards new areas of inquiry and for the more immediate and organic tone to these new works.

The Nancy Sever Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of recent work by Cameron Haas. The title of the exhibition reflects the fact that the artist has relocated to Canberra from Sydney, where he exhibited at the Ray Hughes Gallery.

Cameron Haas was born in Hobart in 1981. He began studying fine art at the University of Tasmania and completed his studies at the National Art School in Sydney where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in 2010. He has won several art awards including the prestigious John McCaughey Painting Prize in 2009.

Artist statement

My work is non-narrative, non-objective geometric painting. I reference Australian and American, Hard Edge, Geometric painters of the 1960s and 1970s. Through a non-narrative perspective I emphasise the “visual” in visual art, drawing on the fundamentals of image making, whilst leaving narrative as second. My interest in painting lies in the act of making, drawing, composing and applying paint.

My work is based on a strong studio practice in which a body of work is developed through a series of line drawings, then slowly coloured, which may take several variations, to achieve a final composition.

Whilst I aim for the surface quality of my paintings not to detract from the overall image, I hand paint my edges instead of using tape allowing minor imperfections to serve as a reminder of the handmade quality of painting.

Colour to me is very important. Two colours placed side by side can attract or repel, alter the pictorial space, and give an overall hum to the painting. With each new body of work I aim to draw on the previous exhibitions and push the possibilities.
